Some launches happen in boardrooms. Ours happened under the spring sun in Footscray Park, surrounded by music, coffee ceremonies, and thousands of people celebrating Enkutatash — the Ethiopian New Year.

On September 5, 2026, at one of Melbourne's biggest African community celebrations of the year, we officially opened the doors of AfriShop — an online African marketplace built for Australia. We could not have imagined a better birthday: a new year for the Ethiopian calendar, and a new chapter for African commerce in this country.

Why Footscray, and why New Year?

Footscray has long been a heartbeat of African life in Melbourne's west — its streets are lined with Ethiopian restaurants, East African grocers, tailors, and cafes where the coffee ceremony is a daily ritual, not a special occasion. When the community gathers in Footscray Park each year to welcome Enkutatash, it brings together generations: elders in traditional white cotton, kids running between stalls, and everyone in between.

Launching AfriShop anywhere else would have missed the point. AfriShop exists to carry exactly this — the products, flavours, and craftsmanship of African communities — beyond the suburbs where it thrives and into every home in Australia. A celebration of new beginnings was the only right place to begin.

The launch day

Our stall was busy from the first hour. Visitors browsed the marketplace live on screen, placed the first orders, and — our favourite part — local business owners came to ask how to get their products online. That conversation, repeated dozens of times through the afternoon, is the whole mission in miniature: AfriShop is not just a place to buy African products, it is a shopfront for African-owned businesses that never had one online.

What you'll find on AfriShop

From day one, the marketplace carries authentic African foods and spices, coffee, fashion and textiles, art and homewares — sourced from African-owned businesses across Australia, delivered to your door. The catalogue grows every week as more sellers come on board.

AfriShop was designed and built by AfriDigi, AfriPlat's digital platform — proof of what we mean when we say we take African-owned businesses into the digital age. The same team that built AfriShop builds websites, e-commerce, and apps for businesses in our community.

New year, new marketplace

Enkutatash marks the end of the rainy season in Ethiopia — the moment the hills turn gold with daisies and everything begins again. We can't think of a better metaphor for what AfriShop hopes to be for African commerce in Australia: a fresh season, full of growth.
